A Fall Creek Falls Trail

Navigating the Trail

The section of the Lower Loop Trail between the Fall Creek Falls parking lot and the junction to Millikan’s Overlook is covered by massive downed trees. In early March, parts of the trail look like a wasteland of sticks due to the lack of vegetation. If you just want to see the overlook, taking the road might be a better option.

The trailhead can be a little hard to find at first, but GPS will guide you there. The trail is mostly flat and easy to walk, although you may encounter a number of fallen trees. Most of these are cut and removed, making the path easier to navigate. It takes about an hour to reach the overlook, which is 1.7 miles from the starting point. The final 50 yards involve a steep descent, which some hikers may choose to skip.

The Spectacular Millikan’s Overlook

Millikan’s Overlook is considered one of the best viewpoints in Fall Creek Falls State Park. The overlook is located halfway down the Scenic Loop Road and features a large wooden platform with ample parking space. The platform also includes one of the park’s color-blind viewfinders, offering an enhanced viewing experience for color-blind visitors.

Buzzard’s Roost, the rock bluff that stretches out just below Millikan’s Overlook platform, provides an additional vantage point. Although the hike down to Buzzard’s Roost is short, it is somewhat steep and the trail is eroded. However, the effort is well worth it, as the views from the roost are arguably better than those from the platform. Buzzard’s Roost juts out further than the platform, allowing for more expansive views in all directions.
